Becalmed on the hobby seas

A breeze sure would be nice.
Progress has been AWOL for the last week or two.  I'm not sure what the problem is exactly, I just know that the drive to sit and paint has waned to the point that I can barely bring myself to get the painting station set up, let alone do something with it.  Building the Ork Dread last week was a good time, yet the prospect of assembling yet more Ork Boys is less than thrilling.  What I'd like to do is put together an Honor Guard for the Blood Angels, but I still need to assemble some more bits for the load-out I have in mind.  There's also the matter of magnetizing, which is all but a must for something like an Honor Guard that has so many options.  Considering that I want to do each Honor Guard with unique heraldry, I'll need to come up with a way to have swappable arms that all share a single pair of shoulder pads which I have yet to figure out.  Lack of magnets is also a concern.

While I haven't gotten much done in terms of painting and modelling, I have been reading.  I just finished the third Horus Heresy book, Galaxy in Flames, the other day and was quite pleased with it.  This book is where the whole marine vs marine aspect of the series, which is the main thrust of it, gets rolling.  I had expected this to develop in the second book, and it did to a limited degree, but in the third book things really speed up.  I also picked up the Chaos Marine codex over the weekend and have started to dig into that as well.  I have a decent bit of Chaos marines in boxes here and there, but I don't plan on building an army in earnest any time soon, mostly because the units that catch my eye the most (Berserkers!) would lead to an army that plays much the same as the Blood Angels do.  What I'd really like to do is an army of recently turned Marines from various chapters.  One of the old Chaos codices had pictures of an army like this, perhaps an older incarnation of the Astral Claws, that were basically loyalist Marines with the aquillas painted over with big red Xs, but I haven't found that book again yet.

So what are my plans to break out of this funk?  I'm not too sure.  I still have Orks waiting for painting, so that's an option.  I also want to hammer away at some new lists, mostly for BAs but also taking another look at Grey Knights and maybe a Chaos list here and there.  In marginally related news, I got the dread blue screen of death on my computer this morning.  Hopefully I can get it resolved without too much hassle, but it's very possible that the funds I had earmarked for BA expansion and Trollbloods will be re-directed to getting my rig back in fighting shape.  Obviously I have access to other computers, but there's nothing like your own, especially when the main alternative is a Mac...

Nursing necklaces...and a surprise!! ;-)

::Abstract:: {Indie Mama} is donating a nursing necklace as a givaway for June! I got one from her and I have to say, it's great! There are all kinds of types of nursing necklaces. The purpose of a nursing necklace baby's just play with to distract them from pinching and scratching the crap out of you. "They are a safe necklace or piece of jewelry that can be worn by moms with breastfeeding babies.
When little ones turn about three months old they begin to get distracted while nursing and may like to pinch, scratch, poke, and yank mom’s hair while breastfeeding. When wearing a nursing necklace (breastfeeding necklace), you can help your baby's focus on breastfeeding while encouraging him or her to explore the necklace beads that are appropriate and safe for little hands. They also provide something fun and pretty to grab without hurting mommy." Breastfeeding Magazine

Personally, both my kids are very active breastfeeders. Olivia (2.5) likes to play with her feet and squirm all around. Ella likes to scratch and smack me. When I put the nursing necklace on, Ella immediately started playing with it. It was perfect for her to wrap her fingers in. I was also wearing it while we were at Perkins once and she was able to gum it because it's made of natural wood and was safe for her to put in her mouth (note that not all nursing necklaces work for this!!).

Dreadnaught Spotted

This guy dreads naught.
Being stuck in a painting quagmire where I just can't seem to make any headway, I decided to switch things up yesterday.  The result is the mostly completed Dread to the right.  There are still bits, bobs, and doodads to be applied, but the bulk of the work is done.  The kit was less intuitive to assemble than I anticipated, but years of modelling and Lego building have built the skills required to make diverse parts into a unified whole, even when the path to completion is not obvious.  I'm on the fence about adding in a boss pole/trophy rack.  It makes sense fluff-wise as the pilot of this contraption would want to make himself as flashy as possible, which would certainly include making his ride as tall as possible.  Adding a flimsy stick to the top of the model is not the most practical choice though, as it's tailor-made to bend and snap under any multitude of pressures.  I have some time to consider since the Dreads won't be making an appearance until the 750 point mark and since EV and I have yet to officially hit the 500 point line it's not a pressing matter.

This kit is as impressive as the other recent GW kits.  There are lots of bits and all possible options are available in the box.  The model itself is full of character, though the slap-dash Orky feel of it will be lessened by having another Dread on the table, making the uniqueness of one less impressive when standing next to another that is unique in the same ways.  The range of motion to pose the thing in is quite extensive, and while this one is pretty standard I plan to push the flexibility of the kit more with the second.  All the arms are ball and socket joints, and the "toes" are separate from the "feet," a feature I hope to exploit by posing the next one in mid-stride, possibly clambering over terrain or the wrecked bodies of certain S&M pointy-ears.  This is by far the best GW vehicle kit I've assembled, but considering all the other vehicles are from the 3rd edition era at best that's not as impressive as it could be.  This kit gives me high hopes for the Furioso, in terms of detail at least as the legs look pretty stiff on that one.

In non-GW news, Privateer Press is making the smart play by responding to the annual GW price hikes with a pretty nice 10th anniversary sale of their own.  The site is a little confused as the exact contents of the sale but it boils down to a faction starter box, tokens, rulebook, and either dice or a tape measure, all for $65.  There's some fine print about shipping as well, but it's a good deal however you slice it.  This is the perfect opportunity to get those Trollbloods I've been oogling.  I'm not excited about assembling big metal warbeasts, and would rather see what the new plastics are like (the Protectorate ones for example), but considering I already have the Warmachine rules it'd be silly to duplicate them.  I've been meaning to pick up the Hordes book for a while though, so I think I can get past the heartache of pinning and filling gaps, assuming I take advantage of this deal of course.  The sale runs through June 20, so I have some time to consider.

In other mini buying news, I missed the Warstore's cutoff for pre-hike prices.  This is a bad thing for obvious reasons, but it has a silver lining.  In contemplating my next order, what I'd really like to get is a Stormraven, a pair of Furiosos, and a box or two of Death Company.  That will about hit my internal price limiter (around $200 this time), especially if I lump in the potential Trollbloods purchase as well.  While that isn't a problem in itself, it's more troubling when I consider what I "should" be getting: more Orks.  An Ork Battleforce would have been a good fit with the mess of Boys (and rokkits/PK Nobs), the new Bikers (for Warboss makings), and the Trukk could have stood in for a Battlewagon if I so desired.  The actual Battlewagon would have been nice as well, but more of a preemptive strike against the higher prices than fueled by a list.  I also need another Dread and 2 boxes of Kans to fill out the list I have in mind for 1750.  The problem is that if I got all that (minus the Battlewagon), I'd also hit the limiter.  Since the Battleforce and Battlewagon are at their new, higher prices now, I don't feel the same compulsion to get them before the increase, so now I feel better about getting BA stuff instead of more Orks.

Boobs N' Brunch or Boobs N' Brinner

Tired of all your nursing photos looking like this? Or how about not having any breastfeeding photos at all because there is never a camera around and/or your partner is horrible at taking pictures?

Last year I hosted the first Boobs N' Brunch in my home and it was a lot of fun! We had about 10 moms with nurslings of all ages come for some intimate portraits capturing that special moment between mother and child. I encourage you to host an event like this in your area! It's easy! If you use my idea, please credit back to our blog. :)

Here are some basic steps:

Find a photographer - negotiate bulk discount rate. Something in the single digits is pretty reasonable considering how many folks the photographer will be seeing in such a short amount of time. It's also a great opportunity for a photographer to make some contacts and build future business. They'll be seeing about four people an hour, if not more, all in one location for something fun. I personally like to ask around LLL meetings or mommy groups and find a local boob enthusiast photographer. If you find your RSVPs are going through the roof you may need more than one photographer.

Set a date and location - local park, in home, whenever! "Open house" seems to work best, so set up a 2-3 hour window and ask folks to RSVP with their approximate time in 10 or 15 minute increments. The photographer will take folks aside one at a time as children are ready for a boob meal. The photographer probably only needs about 10 minutes with each client to get a good amount of nursing photos. Encourage people (especially those towards the end of the session) to call if they are running late so you don't close up shop without them getting their pictures done. We all know how easy it is to run behind when you're dealing with children.

Food? Not necessary, but who doesn't like a good meal while you sit around and chat. You could do potluck and ask everyone to bring something to share, have people bring their own meals, or cater the event and ask for donations. Lots of options! We always do breakfast food because... well... it's delicious. So, brunch for a morning event and brinner for an evening event. Plus it makes for a fun name. I suppose Lactating Lunchies would work too.

Not interesting in a nursing photo? We have lots of other ideas for promoting breastfeeding in a previous blog. Do something fun in your neck of the woods.

If you live in the Twin Cities area and are interested in attending my Boobs N' Brinner event on Sunday July 10th please let me know! More details coming soon!

Blood Angels vs. Plague Marines IV: Once More Into the Breach

Am I on the horse this time?
Battle Chronicler looks pretty, but was taking far too long, so I went back to the usual formula for this report to get it done.  I have tried a different layout, with embedded pictures instead of alternating pictures with blocks of text.  We'll see how it looks.

Last week I was determined to beat EV's Plague Marines.  I had a plan going in: shoot stuff.  Shoot it a lot.  I was hoping my Devs would take down a Daemon Prince, or at least give it a real good wounding, before it could hide in melee.  I knew EV would hide them behind his Rhinos, so I formulated a target priority for the Devs: Daemon Prince > Rhino > Plague Marine > Obliterator.  If the assault marines could create a hole in the Rhino screen then I could potentially send 8 missiles into a Prince, plus any remaining melta, which should accomplish my shooting goals.  I wanted to send something after the Obliterators as well.  Ideally this would be the Sanguinary Guard as they should breeze through a pair of Oblits, possible even two pair.  This would also keep the Guard away from the Princes and Plague Marines so they could come in later to clean squads up.  I also wanted to try Unleash Rage instead of Blood Lance on my Librarian and put him in an assault squad so he'd have more bodies around him for Unleash Rage.  I hoped the rerolls would counter the natural resilience of the Plague Marines so that an assault squad could finally kill one of them.  I made no changes to my list and planned around EV doing the same, which he did.  I won't reproduce them, but I will put in a handy link to the last battle report.  We alternated setting out terrain again and ended up with a table like this:

The battlefield.
EV won the roll and chose the edge with the hill.  We were playing "regular" deployment, using the long sides as our zones, with kill points.  This was the first time I played kill points and after hearing all the moaning about them I was curious to see how they worked.  EV fielded 13 KPs thanks to his Rhinos while I had 12 thanks to combat squading my Devs and each Sanguinary Priest counting as a point.

Deployment.

EV put most of his units in the middle, splitting a pair of Oblits and a Rhino to the side.  I thought about going with the refused flank and loading everything on the side of the Oblits, but with no cover or elevation for my Devs it didn't look so great.  Instead I just spread out to avoid templates and had a sort of zone idea for the game.  I wanted to keep the field of fire for my Devs as clear of my own troops as possible, with the very hard to see yellow-shaded area being my prime real estate.  The Guard and one squad would go up the right to deal with the Oblits while the rest of the army moved up and tried to stay out of each other's way.  With set-up complete, I tried to seize the initiative and failed.

Turn 1.
No picture for the middle of turn 1, so this one at the end is pretty hectic to look at.  EV rushed his Rhinos forward, popping smoke on the lead one and hiding the Daemon Princes behind.  His Obliterators shot up my two rightmost assault squads, killing 3 from each.  When he went into the parking lot formation, I started to curse swapping out Blood Lance for Unleash Rage.  Blood Lance would have been perfect for this situation, potentially able to hit all three Rhinos and maybe even a Daemon Prince.  Lack of lance aside, it was still a promising set-up for me.

The plan that didn't work.
I moved my assault squads to the middle, stringing the one marked for the Obliterators out so that the meltaguns could add in to the Rhino shooting party.  I wanted to pop as many Rhinos as possible while also assaulting all the contents, so I went through my shooting deliberately.  It was for naught though, as all three assault squads and a pair of missiles shot at the lead Rhino and failed to destroy it.  While it had popped smoke, 8 shots should be able to take out a single AV11 vehicle.  Sticking to my targeting priorities I went after the Rhino blocking my LoS to the green Prince and took it out.  The remaining missiles went into the Prince and caused a wound.  I sent in one squad to blow up the smoked Rhino in assault.  This was not how I hoped the turn would go.  Instead of knifing through the Rhinos with melta and crippling a Prince with missiles, I had managed to clog up the central firing lane with a wrecked Rhino and set up my entire army to be assaulted in turn 2.

Middle of turn 2.
EV's second turn almost played itself.  With my squads hanging in the wind he could set his lines for firing and assaulting as he pleased without having to worry about things like ranges.  The one surprise came when he sent the brown Daemon Prince into the assault squad that was, in theory, headed for the Obliterators.  I was also surprised by the double team faced by the squad that assaulted the Rhino, though on reflection the Prince that hit the other assault squad by itself was enough to do the job.  I stopped the green Prince's Warp Time, so more of that squad survived than expected.  The Plague Marines squads double-teaming the assault squad started an epic slap fight that saw little damage caused by either side, thanks to FNP and unenthusiastic power fists.  The brown Prince mopped up the squad it assaulted, save the Sanguinary Priest who was safe from reprisal as the Prince killed everyone else.  I may have caused a wound.  EV also shot at the Sanguinary Guard before all the combat, and probably softened up the brown Prince's target as well.

End of turn 2.
With a large chunk of my force dead, and most of the rest engaged and waiting to die, I didn't have a lot to do.  The Devs shot at what they could to little effect.  Obliterators laugh at krak missiles.  The Guard charged into the brown Prince and cut him down for no loss, then advanced to try and cut down the fire sure to be coming in the next turn.  The green Prince killed his limit thank to Warp Time, while receiving little damage in return.  By now I'd had two rounds of combat with the green Prince where I had two power weapons and a power fist, all rerolling their misses thanks to Unleash Rage, but had little to show for it.  With the mess in the center I sure could have used dice that were at least room temperature, but no love was to be had.

Middle of turn 3.
Like the turn before it, turn 3 played itself in large part.  EV shot up the Guard in the center, but cover kept two members of the squad alive.  He also jockeyed his Rhino around a bit, pulling one back while sending the other forward in the woods.  My Librarian must have died to a Perils of the Warp roll or something as both he and the squad around him died to the Prince this turn, leaving only the Sanguinary Priest alive.  The slap fight trudged on, with each side again killing a single foe.  There were no less than three power fists in this combat, yet three rounds of combat later perhaps 5 models had died.  Epic dice failure.  I won't blame my dice for how this game turned out as I put myself in a bad position on turn 1.  At the same time, bad dice are bad dice and we both had plenty, especially in the slap fight.

End of turn 3.
In the end of turn 3 the Sanguinary Priest the survived the brown Prince's assault joined up with the Guard.  I made a mistake here.  What I did was send this unit behind the Plague Marine lines to charge a unit in the back and then try to roll up the line.  What I should have done was send them against the Daemon Prince.  While they probably would have died in the combat, EV's Prince would have been tied up for another two rounds at least as he could only target one Priest at a time and would have been facing two.  I might even have killed it considering I would have had 8 SG attacks, on the charge, with both Guards having their MC reroll, plus 5 attacks from the charging priest and 4 more from the already engaged Priest, all ignoring armor and forcing the Prince back on it's 5++.  Granted the Prince's higher WS and T6 would have prevented a lot of those hits from wounding, but it had lost a wound or three by this point so it might have gone down.  Instead I cleared out one squad of Plague Marines, freeing up the Guard and the remnants of an assault squad while I lost the Priest engaged with the Prince, who was then free to roam at will.  The Devs may have shot at stuff, but to no effect.  At least my power fist got into the slap fight, killing two Plague Marines while their fist continued to miss.

Middle of turn 4.
Like the rest of them it was pretty obvious what would happen in turn 4.  EV started shooting my Devs, though cover and scatters meant he didn't do much damage.  He also sent the Rhino out of the woods and towards the Devs, popping smoke on the way.  This one had a flamer in the squad and a combi-flamer on the Rhino, so it was about to be a bad time to be holding a missile launcher.  The Prince charged the Guard and wiped them out, while the lone remaining Priest kept the string of futility going.  The slap fight  again produced a loss for each side.  Kindly ignore the extraneous BA shooting lines.  I got my pictures mixed up and thought this was the end of 4, but it's the middle.

End of turn 4.
In my half of turn 4 I shot at the Rhino with everything that could see it, that being 6 missiles.  Once again, a combination of smoke and poor rolls meant the Rhino was unharmed and ready to torch my Devs.  The slap fight came to an abrupt resolution when the Plague Marines decided they were done missing and killed the two remaining Blood Angels for no loss in return.  The Prince also mopped up the Priest.  Four turns later, I had gotten exactly one round of shooting in against the Princes, and that was a half-strength one at best.  The melee in the middle meant my Devs were effectively useless for most of the game as Obliterators were often the only available target.  Now all my infantry was dead while EV still had an untouched squad, a Prince, and the remnants of another squad.  Kill points may have been close, but were about to get a lot further apart.

Turn 5/endgame.
No middle of 5 shot.  See previous turns about the predictability of this one.  EV sent his Rhino squad in, along with the Prince, to wipe out the central Devs.  The Oblits fired into the mass on the left.  After combat, the victors moved up into the teeth of the missiles.  If I had a good turn of shooting, I could take down the Prince and perhaps whittle down the squad as well.  EV hid the pair of Plague Marines in the middle to preserve their KP, so I couldn't have shot at them despite wanting to.  In the end my shooting was as effective as it had been all game, which is to say not at all.  6 missiles into the Prince and still it stood.  We called the game here.

This is probably the worst game of 40k I've played, and certainly the worst since starting back up.  I thought I had a carefully laid plan in turn 1, but lack of shooting prowess combined with forgetting the Princes could fly meant that the game was all one big melee in the middle.  The assault marines and Plague Marines are two tough customers, which results in long combats like this.  Things should have resolved quicker because of all the power fists involved, but in the end all the basic troops did was tie each other down so the hammers could sweep them aside.  EV's two hammers (Princes) beat my one (Sanguinary Guard), and the rest is history.  At least my Psychic Hood worked in this game, which probably saved my Guard from being wiped out when they charged the brown Prince.  The Devs were effective(ish) when they got the chance to shoot, taking out a Rhino and putting a wound on a Prince, but the lone round of shooting before the melee cranked up wasn't nearly enough to get anything substantial done.  The Sanguinary Guard were the lone bright spot here.  They work wonders when they can charge something that doesn't have power weapons, or doesn't have many and goes slower, but they're fragile enough that they only get a charge or two a game before shooting and attrition wear them out.

If I learned nothing else from this game, I learned that assault marines just don't work against Plague Marines, at least not as the main attacking force.  It's hard to believe that I can cut through Deathwing terminators with relative ease but can't do anything against Plague Marines, but the results are convincing.  The B&C has provided a few ideas for immediate use, like Warp Time not affecting armor saves and Blight Grenades not working when the unit is already in combat, but not having the CSM book I'll have to check EV's.  While the lack of armor save re-rolls would be helpful, as is the idea of pinning a squad in place and then piling on, I don't think either one or both of these will turn the tide.  I've said before that I'm convinced I have the tools in my list as it is to beat Plague Marines, but I think I've changed my mind.  Changes are afoot, though what exact kinds I have yet to decide on.  Power weapon spam via either DC or VV is an option, as is meching up, and plasma will be as effective as melta against Rhinos while cutting off FNP and regular armor saves.  Reluctant as I am to change my list to counter EV's, the basic premise of my list (horde of assault marines) is countered very well by Plague Marines, so I can either adapt or continue trying to put the square peg in the round hole.  This sounds a little weird even to me considering this is the best result I've had against the Plague Marines yet, but this high-water mark is well short of the goal.

Weightloss Class

So I got this awesome coupon for a free weightloss class in the mail. Having gone through two pregnancies now I have about 20-30 pounds I'd love to shed and maintain at, so the brochure and offer of free information sounded very appealing to me. Then I looked a little closer and saw that the class is sponsored by a plastic surgery clinic. That's a little weird, right? I wasn't totally turned off by that, because, let's face it... even when someone does loose weight they sometimes need a little nip/tuck to get rid of all that loose skin.

So, I'm at the class getting all this free information on weight loss... and they start handing out free samples and coupons for a donut shop! Can you believe it?? DONUTS at a weightloss class? What kind of crazy universe do we live in? Were they diet donuts? Most definitely not.

My goodness, that is as crazy as a quit smoking class where you get free cigarettes. Or a get-out-of-debt seminar where they hand out free credit card applications.

Okay, so I lie. There is no class I went to on weightloss sponsored by a plastic surgery clinic where free donuts were handed out. But, how is that scenario any different than the breastfeeding 101 classes offered at Babies R Us sponsored by Medela where they reportedly hand out formula coupons?

Now do you get it?

A little something for the wait

First things first, howdy to the folks who will (hopefully) be streaming in via the From the Warp blog network.  There should be other networks up and running, but a special recognition for the first.

A report of Friday's engagement with EV is forthcoming, but it's taking longer than anticipated.  I'm trying out Battle Chronicler, which is free so you should give it a look whether you're really interested or not.  Pretty as the finished product should be, it's also more time consuming than my usual photo + commentary.  I'm sure the program will be easier to use with practice, and it does look pretty, but in the end it'll be subject to the same time invested vs. results obtained scrutiny that anything else is.  Army lists are being written as well, with a bit more purpose than usual.  Without going into great detail or explicit spoilers, my poor Blood Angels are looking for a new way to skin a diseased cat.  I'm hoping to accomplish this with a modest reworking of my list, but if I'm expanding a bit then it's a good enough time to expand a decent bit.  Fortunately I have a large base of infantry already, so any new additions will be "sexy": Vanguard Vets, Honor Guard, Dreads, Preds.  Maybe even a certain flying transport...

With these changes in mind I stopped by a Lowe's and the FLGS.  Magnetizing has been on the to-do list for quite a while, and if I'm looking at Honor Guards and Vanguard Vets I'm going to look at magnets first.  I've seen the list at the Warstore and haven't made any sense of all the various measurements, so I took a look at drill bits first to see what was available.  There are some quite small ones, 1/32" (or 1mm if you're so inclined) and 1/16" looked promising at first glance.  When I compared those measurements to the ones at the Warstore, I see I'm on the small end of the spectrum and that I should be looking at 1/8" bits for best results.  Of course most of the magnets are out of stock, so I have some time to look around.  Perhaps Michael's will carry teeny magnets and save me shipping time.  After Lowe's I went by the FLGS with the intention of coming out with a Dreadnaught, Death Company, or perhaps a Dark Angels Veterans box.  What I found was nothing.  There was a BA battleforce box, but that was it for the boys in red.  This is probably a good thing because I can now dig through my bits to see what I need for what I intend, but it's an unhappy thing to head into a store full of purchasing intent only to be turned away by lack of stock.  At least this way I can see what sort of box a large Warstore order comes in.

Tandemville Part 2

When I was nursing Olivia, we decided we wanted to have another baby. We were told that we couldn't take fertility drugs while I was breastfeeding (not true, by the way, there are some you CAN take!) and that we would have to wean. I was disappointed because I'd wanted to continue nursing Olivia through my pregnancy and hopefully tandem nurse. It took me 3 months, but I very gently weaned Olivia and 3 weeks later (without fertility drugs ) I was pregnant.

When Ella was born 11 weeks early, I was pumping again, as I had done with Olivia. I half hoped that Olivia would want to nurse since it had only been 7 months since she'd weaned. She really had no interest. When Ella came home, I again hoped that maybe she would want to nurse because she saw her baby sister doing it. A few times she would ask to try boobie but she would just plop her lips off my nipple and say she was done. It was okay, I wasn't going to try and force the issue obviously. I came to the conclusion that she wasn't going to breastfeed again, which was a little sad for me because I had cut our breastfeeding relationship short but it was what it was.

Then, a few days ago, out of no where, Olivia said she wanted boobie before bedtime. We sat down on the floor and cuddled and she just put her mouth on it and snuggled. It is a nice way for her to feel like she's getting the same treatment as her sister and give her some one on one time with mama. Then all of a sudden, she started sucking! She pulled back, smiled and said "Mmm...that's nice!" then went back! She popped off and on several times, taking little sucks and getting just a bit of milk. Ella nursed as well and my dreams of tandem nursing came true! :) (Of course, I called Mother Hen on the phone IMMEDIATELY and texted Megz because I had to share the wonderful news with my BFFs!!)
The next day, Olivia was stuffed up and she asked for boobie but she couldn't really nurse because she was so stuffed up.

Today (the 4th day of nursing Olivia), she latched on and nursed EXTREMELY well. Not just this popping off and on and sucking, but honest to goodness latching and nursing. She was so excited, she pulled back and said "Mmm! I like breastmilk! That's GOOD!!" and continued nursing. Today, she breastfed three times. She's very sweet about sharing with Ella and she is patient about waiting if needed. Tonight she was having a bedtime boobie and she pointed to the other one and told me it was Ella's turn to have boobie.

I have a lot of emotions about her nursing. I'm so pleased and happy and I'm also thrilled that she'll start getting the antibodies her sister is getting. It's so important to keep my two kiddos as healthy as can be and it thrills me to no end that she wanted to and was able to latch on and nurse again. I know some people would view it as odd that we've returned to breastfeeding after over a year of not breastfeeding, but this is what works for us. We are happy with this and just as I will do with Ella, I will nurse Olivia for as long as she feels she needs and wants it. <3

Eff You Fenugreek!

Herb Pharm Fenugreek Liquid Extract 1 oz liquid
Okay... so... I picked up some fenugreek last weekend. Why? Well, my daughter only gained 2 oz from her 4 month to 6 month appointment would be reason number 1. Number 2 is that I am tandem nursing her and Chicken Little, so I wondered if increasing my supply would get her more of the good stuff as I felt bad about limiting him. And Number 3 is I wanted to continue pumping milk for donation. I
know that nursing is a supply/demand situation, so my children and pumping once a day should have my body make enough milk... but I couldn't help but wonder if a little herbal assistance would do us some good. Did I think I had a supply issue? No. Everyone seemed happy and healthy, and I just about always got 3-4 oz out of a pumping session. But, I figured it couldn't hurt to try some fenugreek.

Sunday I picked up a liquid form of fenugreek. Instructions say to use 2-5 drops in some water and drink it. Saying to myself "It's just a couple drops" I immediately went to the max 5 drop dosage and did this Sunday through Tuesday.

Sunday through Tuesday both of my children, who are normally fantastic sleepers (we're talking angels of awesome here) were up every 1-2 hours. I was quickly losing my sanity. I didn't know what my toddlers problem was, but I assumed that my baby was teething (because aren't they always teething???) My baby was also going on some nursing strikes. She'd nurse for 1-2 minutes and just arch back screaming and upset. I was getting frantic because her eating habits are already first and foremost on my mind as I have been trying to fatten her up. She was also refusing to sleep on her tummy, to which she normally insists on sleeping that way. So, I was totally confused and messed up.

Wednesday and Thursday I was so tired and out of it that I forgot to take my fenugreek. Guess what... the children slept AWESOME. Not having made the connection yet I took fenugreek on Friday. Then it all clicked. Could the fenugreek be upsetting my children somehow?? Well, Friday night SUCKED... so I'm gonna have to say yes! I'm wondering if a smaller dose would be okay? Whodda thunk that a couple drops of liquid could cause so much trouble! Now, I'm thinking this is all because I don't really have a supply issue... so maybe someone who really does need fenugreek these issues don't show up. But then again I'm just taking a stab in the dark. BUT, I had no clue this was even a possibility and upon asking around I'm not the only mom to have this experience.

"Possible side effects for baby

Most of the time, baby is unaffected by mom's use of fenugreek (except that more milk is usually available). Sometimes baby will smell like maple syrup, too (just like mom). However, some moms have noticed that baby is fussy and/or has green, watery stools when mom is taking fenugreek and the symptoms go away when mom discontinues the fenugreek.

Fenugreek can cause GI symptoms in mom (upset stomach, diarrhea), so it's possible for it to cause GI symptoms in baby too. Also anyone can have an allergic reaction to any herb, and fenugreek allergy, though rare, has been documented.

Another reason for these types of symptoms --and perhaps more likely than a reaction to the herb-- may be that mom's supply has increased due to the fenugreek and the symptoms are those of oversupply, where baby is getting too much foremilk. Fussiness, gas and green watery stools are classic symptoms of an overabundant milk supply."

So, lesson is... don't mess with a good thing. My daughter looks healthy and happy... and is having plenty of wet diapers. Why did I even worry? I caused more of a problem now because of her nursing strikes and sleeplessness. Bah!!! And it's not really fenugreeks fault. It's mine for having doubting my boobs. :-/

Why Didn't I Wean?

Before I was pregnant with my first child I had known plenty of folks who breastfed, but really hadn't gotten into semantics about it. For all I know they only did it for a few weeks. During that pregnancy I talked to several girlfriends and the longest anyone had nursed was about 10/11 months. She stopped after being bitten. Made sense to me! I thought she was amazing and I immediately set a lofty (or so I thought at the time) goal of making it atleast that far.

When my son was just a few weeks old we went to visit a family member who had her second child about two months earlier than me. Through emails during our overlapping pregnancies I had learned that she was a breastfeeding advocate, so naturally it came up in conversation when I was at their home after the birth of my child. She causally mentioned that she had nursed their older child until she was 4 years old. I wasn't grossed out, but I sure was surprised. I had never heard of such a thing! I talked to my husband about it later that night, and he pondered if the toddler was nursing straight from the breast or if she was just getting pumped milk. I remember feeling like "oh yeah, duh, she probably is just getting pumped milk." Ha ha ha... oh how naive and just plain dumb I was on the whole topic. ::face palm::

When my son's first birthday came and went I'm really not sure why I didn't wean him. We started cows milk, he barely drank any of it. I think had he really taken to it our breastfeeding relationship may have taken a different course. Maybe? Who knows. At 12 months old he was 18 pounds, so still pretty little. Part of my concern was his size and taking away breastmilk made no sense if he wasn't going to be getting fatty nom noms from something else. Also, I was in a parenting class with about five other moms who all had boys roughly the same age and no one else was weaning. I certainly didn't want to break ranks! I did have a handful of disapproving comments from family members, subtle mentions about how they knew someone who nursed their child to an age where the child could basically 'help themselves' to the breast and how creepy it was. I think my motto at the time was "when he can spell it he's too old for it". Oh, and for the record... children can 'help themselves' straight out of the womb.

Once we got past 15 months the thought of weaning was a distant memory. I just nursed whenever he asked for it. It was winter, cold & flu season was rampant. I had read somewhere to never wean a child during cold & flu season. The antibodies help protect them from getting sick and/or if they do get sick the cold won't last as long. Seemed like a good idea to me!

When he was 17 months old we started trying for another baby, and it didn't take much trying. This added a new twist onto things! The first trimester was sensitive and painful some nursing sessions, and others we were just dandy as though nothing was different. Several times I thought we were going to stop, but I kept him on atleast once a day hoping that it would get better and that he'd be around to help me through engorgement once the new baby was here. I know, I'm selfish.

Around 22 months I'm pretty sure my milk was gone, but he was perfectly happy comfort nursing and getting a little colostrum (cat nip for toddlers). I remember thinking that I'd "let" him nurse until 26-27 months to make up for the 2 months he was robbed for the full 2-year minimum recommendation because by then my milk would have returned with the new baby.

At 25 months tandem nursing was introduced into my world. I was overwhelmed and a little touched out at times... but the majority of it was amazing, wonderful, and made our bond even stronger.

27 months came and went... weaning just didn't make sense. 2 years old was the MINIMUM. Right?? Why on earth would I take away my tantrum tamer, booboo fixer, and chill pill at such a fragile time when his world had just been rocked with the introduction of a baby sister?

Now we're 4 months shy of his 3rd birthday and no signs of stopping. I am now in a strong community of friends and family who support me. Chicken Little is now getting in the range when children naturally wean, although I could only be at the halfway point. Only he knows. I'm happy we stuck with it. Was it learning that someone nursed their child to the age of 4? Was it being in a peer group where no one else weaned? Was it just that my son wouldn't drink anything else? Probably a combination of everything I've been through. It might just be mentioning it to that ONE person that changes their breastfeeding relationship forever.

So, thanks to everyone that normalized nursing and full term nursing for me. Look at the monster you helped create. :)

What can you do with an hour? Or a Dethcopta?

Adjusting is the name of the game.
Had another game of Warhammer Quest on Tuesday.  This time our party was successful in spite of losing the Barbarian in the second room.  Quest remains a brutal game, but perhaps not unworkable.  Throughout the game I was considering house rules on the number of extra events via power dice.  Limiting it to one at a time was my first thought, but on reflection I think that might be a bit much.  Two at a time is intriguing as it allows for problems to compound on each other, potentially 3 events at a time if you get two extra events while dealing with the standard room event, while not overwhelming the party with 4+ events in a row.  I've had some horrific power rolls in these latest games, so 4+ is neither impossible nor terribly rare.  Since more events take longer to do, which leads to more power rolls and more potential extra events, once the ball starts rolling it soon becomes unwieldy.  Next time around I may start tweaking and seeing how it works.  NGF also asked a question that had me stumped.  We did the good gamer thing for dinner: ordered pizza.  Said pizza arrived when we still had (potentially) 5 rooms to go, so we hurried along to the finish to avoid mixing pizza and cardboard tiles/cards.  NGF remarked on the length of the game, around 2.5 hours including dicking around time.  This is pretty standard for gaming and I told him as much, and in return he asked if there was anything that took around an hour.  This is where I'm stumped.  I have a few ideas, mostly combat patrol/40k in 40 minutes and battlebox Warmahordes.  Neither of those options represents the parent game well, though battlebox games aren't far off, so I'd like to find something that's a better fit.  I want something that is based around minis, something that requires collecting and painting which will eliminate most boardgames.  I'd also like something that doesn't take a full-sized (6x4) table to play and something that requires little to no terrain.  Not too much to ask for, right?

In other news I saw a post about lots of orks on 3++ this morning, one that reminded me of another post I had seen on fester 40k a while ago.  I have 6 Dethcoptas, mostly in pieces, none of which is a lock to ever see the table.  At the same time I have a single rocket buggy, and a trak at that, which is featured in every ork list I've written.  Since these examples look so nice, and I have a surplus of coptas with a deficit of buggies, I'm thinking I'll convert up at least 3 of the coptas into buggies.  I would change them all over if the base Dethcopta model wasn't so nice, plus there's always the chance that FAQs and new editions will make the coptas more attractive than buggies.  I have 3 buggies already, two wheeled shootas and one trakked rokkit, so I may do two conversions with trakks and one with wheels to make two coherent squadrons.  Of course if I did all of the coptas I have I'd be maxed out on rokkit buggies, which would be nice.  Plus I can always get more copta models via AoBR, Ebay, or something similar.  They should be pretty cheap.  I also think I'm gonna take a pass on converting the AoBR boys.  They should only be about half of the Slugga boys and they aren't all the same model, just similar poses, so hopefully they blend in well enough and everything looks nice.

All About the Benjamins

There's been lots of news on the GW front of late, new materials and new prices.  I'm still undecided on a bile-filled rant about abusing your customers and a more moderate, everything-is-more-expensive approach.  The end result is likely to be less GW purchases, but considering I have the bulk of my two armies already this isn't much of a change.  My BA foundation is broad and solid in terms of infantry and I have more than a few vehicles, though none in great quantity beyond old Rhinos, so any additions are going to be small and specialized (hello Honor Guard/Vanguard Vets).  The orks are in much the same position.  I think I need one of the new bikers, a dread, a box of kans, and maybe some rokkit launchas to hit my 1750 list, so that's another small investment.  GKs didn't get an increase (yet), but having no non-HQ models and having yet to settle on a list means they're a possible future purchase, but not one that's just waiting it's turn in the money queue.  Of course I really should be working through my backlog and not adding new toys anyway, but we all know how well that goes in the hobby.  There's also other game systems to take into account.  These issues are a little closer to the front than usual because of the GW increase, but also because I just got my tax returns.  Considering I've painted a bunch of orks since the last time I got something new, I feel comfortable with growing some force, even if I haven't decided on which one yet.  If only Men-O-War or Iron Fang Pikemen were out in plastic so I didn't have to deal with all that metal then it'd be a harder choice, though I hear pictures of Bombardiers are in the leaked photos for Wrath so perhaps there is hope on the horizon.

On the hobby progress front, not much going on painting-wise over the last few days.  I have some assorted pieces with me that I intend to paint, but I've been intending all this time with no result.  I did find a couple new approaches to painting orks that I want to try out though, so maybe some Slugga boys or Nobs get painted today.  I dickered around with BA lists last night, looking for a way to pack in some of the stuff I like but don't really use: Death Company, Chaplains, Baals, Vindicators.  Taking the two tanks means a switch to a mech list, and this is the result:

130 - Chaplain
260 - 9 Death Company w/ Thunder Hammer & Rhino

175 - non-DC Tycho
105 - Corbulo
204 - 8 Assault Marines w/ Meltagun, Power Fist, Rhino

222 - 9 Assault Marines w/ Meltagun, Power Fist, Rhino
65 - Sanguinary Priest w/ Power Weapon

222 - 9 Assault Marines w/ Meltagun, Power Fist, Rhino
65 - Sanguinary Priest w/ Power Weapon

145 - Baal w/ Heavy Bolter Sponsons
155 - Vindicator w/ Siege Shield

1748 total

Nothing radical here, just a Rhino rush with some armored firepower behind it.  Corbulo is in there because I had extra points at one phase, though I'll look into downgrading him to a regular SP and adding more DC gear.  I also want to see if I can get a couple smaller Razorback squads to carry the Priests around, allowing the Rhinos to carry full squads (and therefore two Meltaguns).  Tycho was another happy coincidence of extra points at one stage, though he could get Corbulo'd for a Librarian and more bodies/gear.  This isn't an optimized list and is instead based on models I have available.  I've never really looked into a full-on mech list because I like jump troops, but I'm probably pretty close to a decent list with what I have on hand.  I have a re-re-rematch with EV's Plague Marines this week and am considering changing my list for it, but I'm convinced I have the tools to win in my existing list so I want to win (or at least have a good showing) with it before I try something new.

Forest Lake Georgia.... Meet Real World Please

Days like today I feel like I must have traveled through time or am in a parallel universe… but no… we live in a time and place where a city council can pass an ordinance that tells moms they are no longer welcome to feed their children in public. At 729 days old it is perfectly acceptable… and then magically at 730 days it becomes some horrid indecent act that must be hidden away.

FOREST PARK, Ga. -- A new law in metro Atlanta will limit breast feeding in public.

On Monday night, Forest Park passed a public indecency ordinance to prevent public nudity. Previously, the city only had a public indecency ordinance that covered adult entertainment businesses.

According to the law, no woman can breast feed anyone older than 2 years old in public. City manager John Parker called the law a proactive step.

“It sets up a process whereby we can try to control nudity throughout the entire city," Parker said.

HOW did this even end up to be a city council issue? My brain must imagine there are one or two brave toddler nursing mama’s around town and a whole lotta loud complainers about it. Now these mothers are being shamed into hiding their nursing at home. Why is it even slightly questionable? Well, Georgia state law is: Ga. Code § 31-1-9 (1999) states that the breastfeeding of a baby is an important and basic act of nurture which should be encouraged in the interests of maternal and child health and allows a mother to breastfeed her baby in any location where the mother and baby are otherwise authorized to be. (1999 SB 29, Act 304; 2002 SB 221). – That pesky word ‘baby’ is probably what people will try to stand behind. Now Georgia gets to wastes tons of taxpayer money to get the word ‘baby’ changed to ‘child’ just like now Tennessee had a limit of 12 months on their law which was recently changed to express no limit. It was reported that the 12 month limit was not meant to restrict, it was just simply an oversight when they wrote the law. Can’t we just change them ALL in one swoop and move on to more important things like creating jobs and stabilizing the economy???

Contact Forest Park and let them know what you think:

Or better yet, there is a nurse-in scheduled for Memorial Day May 23rd 10am. Meet at the city park behind city hall and follow everyone to the building. If you aren’t nursing you are still welcome to come and show your support. City Hall 745 Forest Parkway Forest Park, Ga

In the meantime… I have a feeling there are going to be some really old looking 23 month olds running around Georgia.

Something neat I found

How Khadoran is this?
While looking through the Freebooter Miniatures gallery, I saw a model that would be a perfect fit for Khador.  Manhuntress was my first thought, but there'd be a bit of cutting and swapping to get axes in there.  Upon further gazing, I think Sorscha would be the right choice.  While there's less armor than usual for a warcaster, the overall feel fits.  The bustier, the hat, the polearm (which would need a hammer head on it, but that's minor), even the haughty look on the face works so well.  I may have to see what the US dollar to Euro conversion rate is like these days.  (Looks like ~1.5:1, which means this model would be about $15 without shipping.  Very intriguing...)  I think I've seen this model before, and probably in the same "Isn't this so Khadoran?" context, but I've never shied away from reinventing the wheel before.  If I played the Iron Kingdoms RPG, this model would be my first choice for a young, up-and-coming Sorscha.  Considering they also do a mini that could work as a young Gorman di Wulfe and story ideas just spring forth from the ether. Freebooter minis show up a decent bit on Jen Haley's site, and for good reason.  They're nice sculpts of hot ladies, two things close to any gamer's heart.  They even have a Lara Croft mini, though it's called something else.

Sex at ATLOSCon

Okay, so maybe not formal, organized sex. But at least a class on sex. And plenty of chances to meet attractive Oists. The rest is up to you! :)

The class that I am talking about is called "Sexual Ethics and Objectivism," and it's being given by Jason Stotts of Erosophia fame. You can find a description of his talk here.

What I like about Jason's approach to sex is that he isn't a prude. I'm so done with people who, after chucking Christianity and altruism, can't seem to chuck Christian sexual ethics. Jason wants us all to talk more about sex, get more comfortable with how central it is to a happy human life, and learn to do it better and better. Those are goals I can get behind (pun completely intended).

As you can see from this picture, he clearly belongs here in Atlanta!

Here are some comments from a few of his other (famous on the internets) fans:

"I've read many of Jason Stotts's posts on his blog, Erosophia, and I've found it extremely interesting and thought-provoking. Jason's insights into sex and sexuality are quite astute--his clarity and precision of thought have definitely aided my own thinking on the issues he tackles, and it's refreshing that his analyses are not inhibited by conventional Victorian attitudes about sex, but rather frank and open." -- Arthur Zey

"Although I was never very religious growing up, have been studying Objectivism for 4 years and considered myself to have a very healthy sex life, I was surprised to find that many of my opinions about the morality of sex were based on the stereotypical Judeo/Christian values of American culture. Reading Jason's blog this past year has challenged my views on the morality of sex in more ways than I thought possible, and for that, I am forever grateful! I really enjoy his sex tips and his posts on etymology." -- Kelly Valenzuela

And from my Aaron, who is always ready to say something provocative and in the #AaronZone (but let's face it, so is Jason Stotts, though in the most calm and reasoned way possible):

"Jason Stotts is the Dan Savage of Objectivism. His blog Erosophia advocates rational, honest communication in relationships, along with being very sex positive and understanding the importance of being 'good, giving, and game'. He pushes the boundaries of some Objectivists by getting into unconventional topics such as anal play, pegging, and a new look at roles of masculinity and femininity. Erosophia recognizes that sex is not amoral, and that morality is extremely important to the proper role of sex. Yet it also recognizes that so much concerning sex can be a matter of individual differences, of optional values rather than universal/moral ones, including not only sexuality and libido, but also one's desires, kinks, and - even more controversial - desire for monogamy versus polygamy. I enjoy and recommend Erosophia and hope other Objectivists also discover and are willing to be pushed out of their comfort zone by it." -- Aaron Bilger

Jason and his wife Megan

Jason himself answers the question, "Why have you focused your academic interests on sex?":

"I get this question a lot: why sex? Why do I want to write about sex? Well, it seemed like a good choice, since, as a man in his sexual prime, I spend enough time thinking about sex that it seems like it’s not too much more effort to direct this thought and put words to paper.

"To be honest, though, the answer is deeply rooted in my past and psychology. You see, I was raised by a father who was a cross between a Nietzshean egoist, a Hedonist, and an amoralist. The result was a man whose primary care in life was sexual conquest. Quantity, not quality, was his goal and he did his best to instill this thought to his three sons. I, being the oldest son, tried for some time to live up to my father’s ideals. However, it didn’t take long for me to see that there were deep flaws with his position. Unfortunately, I couldn’t articulate exactly what was wrong with it and that bothered me deeply. I knew that this path of hedonistic conquest was wrong, but I couldn’t say why. Some people complain that they are left ignorant about sex by their parents. I would have been glad to have been given the gift of ignorance. Instead, I was saddled with bad ideas and the drive to discover precisely why these were wrong and what, then, was right.

"The primary reason that I write about sex is because I think that it’s silly that people are willing to shine the light of reason on nearly any other aspect of their lives, but not on sex. Sex is not some magical phenomenon, although sometimes it feels like it might be. Sex is part of being human, part of our nature and of “the human experience.” Further, it’s not like we need fear that looking too closely at sex will spoil the magic. To paraphrase Robert Solomon, if looking too closely will spoil the magic, then sex is a cheap trick indeed. We need to dispense with our irrational taboos regarding sex and take a fresh look at it. We need to not shelter ourselves in ignorance of sex and hope for the best, but to actively engage sex and make the most of our lives."

I'm very excited about hearing Jason's talk and discussing the ideas later with the other attendees. I hope you'll join us for Jason's talk and for all the other exciting classes and social events on our schedule. If you haven't signed up for ATLOSCon yet, get going! It's only 2 weeks away, but there is still time to register. See you there!
